Lake Almanor, at 4500 feet altitude, has to be one of the most undiscovered areas by California residents in NE California/Plumas / Lassen county area. Just outside of the city of Chester , Lake Almanor was created by Great Western Power in the early 1900s.

The lake is known for its warm waters, excellent fishing and watersports. It is uncrowded and much more friendly toward water sport enthusiasts than Lake Tahoe. Chester is a small town (but you will find most residents large at heart) around 6 miles NE of our house in Goose Bay.

Just 25 miles NW of our house you will find the entrance road to Lassen National Park, home of Mount Lassen / Lassen Peak (10,500+ feet altitude) which erupted last in 1915. If you like hiking and great views, then the park offers many wonderful options. Even though Lassen Park is closed in the winter, access to the park is still available for LOTS of snow-related fun. From easy hikes to Bumpass Hell to more strenuous hikes like the Mills Falls hike or the Butte Lake/ Cider Cone hike or to the TOP of Lassen Peak (What a view!).

East of Chester is Westwood, once home to one of the nation's largest electric sawmills. Westwood hopes to become a ski village one day with the development of the Dyer mountain year round resort.

Further east up highway 36 is Eagle Lake and Susanville. Eagle Lake is known primarily for the famous Eagle Lake Trout. Susanville is roughly 40 miles from Chester and 80 Miles Northwest of Reno. North of Lassen National Park , you will find Burney Falls probably one of the most beautiful falls in California. Burney is a little over  90 minutes from the house and well worth the drive.

On the way to Burney you will pass several spectacular sights: The Caribou Wilderness and Crater Lake a small 5 acre lake in the pit of an extinct volcano. The lake was named as one of the great unknown lakes of America. Filled with golden trout, Crater Lake is a great place to fish, swim or camp. Further up Highway 44 you will find Poison lake, Butte Lake and finally Subway Cave a lava tube at the back door of Lassen National Park.

If one wants a map or has a question about the Lassen National Forest, it's strongly recommended that you stop by to see the nice, helpful people at the Almanor Ranger District office across from the Chester airport on the way to Chester on CA 36/ Phone: 530-258-2141
